There is no better place in Toraja to experience the beauty of nature than Batutumonga. Located on a dramatic ridge, high on the slopes of Gunung (Mount) Sesean, 90 minutes’ drive away from Rantepao, the capital of Toraja Utara. Batutumonga offers relaxing ambiance, cool temperature, and beautiful views. On different viewpoints, you will discover the scenery is spectacular. It offers a mixture of terraced paddy fields, forests, and open grassland. On a clear day, you can see Rantepao in the distance. It is the perfect place to visit, sit, relax and drink a warm cup of Tana Torajan coffee.

Stop by the rice fields and touch the soil where the heart of Torajan lies, and traverse into the misty forests of the rising dawn

From Rantepao the route to Batutumonga winds slowly upwards in looping s-bends and along windy roads. You will pass Tinambayo, one of the famous viewpoint. Located 1,300 meters above sea level, it offers beautiful views of rice terraces and the valley below. It’s worth stopping here even if it is just to take a few photos.

Gunung (Mount) Sesean is located in Desa (village of) Sesean, upwards of Batutomonga. Sunrise is one of the highlights for tourists visiting Batutumonga. With its mountain tip at 2,100 meters above sea level, it is the highest point of the highlands, where tourist usually hike up to reach the peak. Hiking treks are available taking time to about 4 – 5 hours to reach the top with the view of the whole Toraja as your reward.
